He was the son of Walter Jerry Barner and Leah Genevieve Schrack. Grant married (1) Bertha Florence Lyman. Grant married (2), at the age of 31 Doris J. Shields, age 26, daughter of Harry Shields and Claire Forcey, on Friday, 20 June 1958 at Clinton County, Pennsylvania. He died at home on Wednesday, 11 April 2007 at the age of 80 years, 7 months and 7 days at Eastville, Greene Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania. He was interred on Saturday, 14 April 2007 at Sugar Valley Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Eastville, Greene Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania.
